The Wine

Organic and from one of the warmer sites in Chablis and, like the Grand Crus, with prime southern exposure.  Typically gives wines of more body and richness and most other 1er sites though at Malandes, Mont de Milieu is also always complemented with zippy acids and crunchy chalk minerality.

Burghound: 92 Points: Top Value! A vaguely exotic note lurks in the background of the cool but ripe mix of white and yellow peach, quinine and acacia blossom that is trimmed in soft wood. There is both excellent volume and power to the larger-scaled flavors that possess notably better complexity on the saliva-inducing, balanced and beautifully persistent finish. As is often the case chez Malandes, this is the best of their premier crus.

Wine Advocate: 92 Points : The 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu is showing well, exhibiting aromas of waxy citrus rind and green apple mingled with toasted nuts, flowers and a subtle hint of oak. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and fleshy, with racy acids and a gently vanillin-inflected finish, it will show well with a bit of bottle age to integrate. Drink 2023-2035

About the Wine Maker

Commenting on the 2021 Vintage : As I wrote last year, Richard Rottiers, whose Beaujolais wines readers will find reviewed in these pages later this month, presides over the renaissance of Domaine des Malandes. This once somewhat neglected estate has been converted to organic farming, with all the work it entails; a massale selection program for Chardonnay has been launched, and winemaking has been refined, with cuvées now matured in used 500-liter oak barrels that make their presence felt much more discreetly. As I remarked to Rottiers, the rate of improvement at this address has surpassed anything I thought possible, and this is now clearly an estate to watch closely

Domaine des Malandes, nestled in the heart of Chablis, is a renowned winemaker with a rich heritage spanning three generations. Established in 1982, this family-owned estate boasts 29 hectares of meticulously tended vineyards dedicated to outstanding Chardonnay cultivation. With a commitment to sustainable farming practices, Domaine des Malandes produces approximately 200,000 bottles annually, including an impressive range of Premier Cru and Grand Cru Chablis wines. Their dedication to preserving the authentic terroir of the region, combined with modern winemaking techniques, has earned them a well-deserved reputation for crafting exceptional and expressive Chablis wines. The Domaine is currently owned and operated by Richard Rottiers, who has taken this estate to a new level with the introduction of organics and only replanting with massale selection Chardonnay. Year after year, these wines have been making huge increases in quality, with 2022 being one of their most outstanding vintages yet. EFW
